Indian Police Urged to See Prostitutes as Victims

1 Aug 07 - Indian police must treat prostitutes as victims rather than criminals and crack down instead on clients and human traffickers who force women and children to sell their bodies, activists said Wednesday.

 

Hundreds of thousands of women and girls in India are sold, coerced or trafficked for sex in a highly organized, yet illicit trade which is the world's third most lucrative after arms and drugs.

31 July 07 - Around here, in the hills of northeastern India, it's called the "bhut jolokia" - the "ghost chili."  Anyone who has tried it, they say, could end up an apparition.

 

"It is so hot you can't even imagine," said the farmer, Digonta Saikia, working in his fields in the midday sun ...  "When you eat it, it's like dying."

Sex Workers Chronicle Life in Indian Brothels

31 July 07 - "Red Light Despatch," a monthly publication, is full of emotional outpourings of women sold to brothels as children, personal accounts of torture and harassment, poems and essays by prostitutes, book and film reviews and advocacy articles. 

 

Although prostitution is illegal in India, it is a thriving underground industry and voluntary groups estimate that there are about 2 million women sex workers.

Indian Family Values Intact: Survey

30 July 07 - It's all about loving your family, especially if you are an Indian.  Defying the grim prognosis of a breakdown in traditional values, Indians are stayng together as family, finds a 57-nation survey.

 

Nearly 84% of the Indians questioned in the survey say spending time with their families is their favorite pastime.  Divorce rate, a mega indicator of the breakdown of old values, is under 1% in India.

'93 Mumbi Blasts: Death for Yakub Memon

27 July 07 - Yakub Memon, the chartered accountant brother of prime accused Tiger memon, was on Friday sentenced to death by the special TADA court hearing the 1993 serial blasts case, taking the total number of those given capital punishment in the case to 12.

Indian Police Find 30 Bags Full of Babies' Bones

23 July 2007 - Thirty polythene bags ... have been found in a dry well near a private clinic in the east Indian state of Orissa, police said on Monday.  The manager of the clinic has been arrested.
